Rental vs Buying: Is a Mini Excavator Worth It?
News | September 17, 2026 | Updated October 11, 2026
Quick Answer
A mini excavator can be worth buying when you have recurring work for it, the machine can complete that work, and owning it costs less than renting an equivalent machine over the period you expect to use it.
For a one-off project, rental often avoids paying for storage, maintenance and a machine that will sit idle afterwards. For regular work, ownership can give you access to the machine when you need it. The decision depends on your workload and local quotes, not a universal number of hours or days.

Start With Your Annual Workload
Write down the jobs you expect to complete during the next year: drainage trenches, landscaping excavation, small foundations or recurring property maintenance. Estimate productive machine days for those jobs. Do not count every day the machine will be parked on site as a day of useful work.
Then check whether one machine can cover the list. A low purchase price is little help if you still need to rent another excavator for the deeper or larger jobs.
Qisheng’s QS12 / QS12PRO catalog, for example, lists a 940 mm machine width and 1,760 mm maximum digging depth. A job requiring a 2 m excavation exceeds that listed maximum depth. In that case, collect prices for a larger configuration that can complete the job.
Access needs the same attention. A narrow gate is only one restriction; there must also be room to position the machine and work. Use the mini excavator sizes guide to narrow the choice before collecting prices.
Compare the Same Costs on Both Sides
Use the same jobs, attachments and time period for the rental and purchase options.
| Cost | Renting | Owning |
|---|---|---|
| Getting the machine | Rental charge for the actual booking period | Purchase cost less expected resale value over the ownership period |
| Moving it | Delivery and collection charges | Delivery, hired transport or the cost of your own transport |
| Running it | Fuel, chargeable wear and other costs in the rental terms | Fuel, servicing, wear parts and repairs |
| Keeping it available | Any agreed cover, extensions or additional charges | Insurance, storage and financing costs where applicable |
For an annual cost comparison, spread the expected loss in value over the years you plan to own the machine. Do not count the full purchase price every year as well as depreciation. Likewise, do not count loan principal repayments as an additional ownership expense if you have already accounted for the purchase and resale values. A separate cash-flow check is still needed to see whether you can afford the initial payment and repayments.
Get a rental quote for the actual booking pattern. Ten separate one-day hires may have different delivery charges and rates from one continuous rental. Include the same attachments in both quotes.
A Buy-or-Rent Calculation You Can Replace With Quotes
The following figures are assumptions for an example, not Qisheng selling prices or current rental rates:
| Assumption | Amount |
|---|---|
| Annual fixed ownership cost, including an allowance for loss in value | USD 3,000 |
| Running cost of the owned machine per productive day | USD 50 |
| Equivalent rental cost per productive day, including the costs being compared | USD 200 |
With these assumptions, ownership costs USD 3,000 + USD 50 × working days. Rental costs USD 200 × working days.
| Productive days per year | Rental cost | Ownership cost | Result in this example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | USD 2,000 | USD 3,500 | Rental costs USD 1,500 less |
| 20 | USD 4,000 | USD 4,000 | Equal cost |
| 40 | USD 8,000 | USD 5,000 | Ownership costs USD 3,000 less |
The equal-cost point is 3,000 ÷ (200 − 50) = 20 productive days per year. Change the purchase, resale, repair or rental assumptions and that threshold changes too. It is not a general rule that everyone should buy after 20 days.
Repeat the calculation with a lower workload and a higher repair allowance. If buying only looks attractive when every planned job goes ahead and no extra repairs occur, the purchase depends on an optimistic forecast.
When Renting or Hiring a Contractor Is the Better Choice
Rental can make more sense when the work is temporary, different projects need different excavator sizes, or you have nowhere suitable to store and maintain a machine.
Hiring a contractor is another option when the main requirement is a completed job rather than access to equipment. An excavation quote includes the operator’s work; a bare-machine rental does not. Include your own time, transport and any other equipment needed before comparing the totals.
Ownership may still suit regular work even when the calculated saving is modest, because you can schedule jobs around your own machine. Decide how much that availability is worth to you, while keeping the cost comparison based on work you expect to have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mini excavator worth it for a homeowner?
It can be, particularly for repeated property projects. For one drainage or landscaping job, compare a complete rental quote and a contractor’s quote before committing to ownership. Include what happens to the machine after that project finishes.
Should I buy new or used?
A used machine may reduce the initial payment, but its condition and likely repair costs affect the comparison. A new machine’s warranty can help with specified defects; it does not remove every running cost or guarantee uninterrupted work. Compare the actual warranty terms, service records and repair allowance.
How do I estimate resale value?
Compare machines of similar age, operating hours, specification and condition in your market. Asking prices are not proof of completed sale prices. Use a conservative estimate and check whether the decision still works if the eventual resale value is lower.
