Zero Tail Swing Mini Excavators: Clearance Checks

Qisheng Machinery · Buyer Guide · Prepared October 20, 2026

Quick Answer

Zero tail swing mini excavators are designed to keep the rear of the upper structure within the stated track envelope during rotation. That can help beside a wall or fence, but the description does not cover the whole working machine. The bucket, boom, cab, blade and any extra counterweight still need their own clearance checks.

Choose from a drawing of the actual configuration, rather than a zero-tail badge alone. A machine that can enter a passage may still lack room to dig, turn the attachment or place spoil. The width and access guide deals with passage measurements; this guide addresses what happens after the upper structure starts turning.

Separate the Three Spaces on Your Site Plan

A useful plan shows the travel route, the upper-body rotation area and the working area around the attachment. These overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A narrow entrance is a width problem. A counterweight approaching a building is a rear-clearance problem. A bucket passing above a fence is a work-equipment problem.

Site constraint Specification or evidence to request What it does not establish
Rear body beside a wall Tail-swing overhang for the quoted configuration Clearance for the front attachment
Narrow access passage Overall width in the permitted travel configuration Permission to work with tracks retracted
Fence or wall alongside a trench Boom-swing range and an offset working diagram Clearance behind the operator station
Loading spoil Reach, loading height and truck position A safe route for every bucket movement
Added counterweight or accessory Revised dimensions and applicable capacity information Unchanged dimensions from the base brochure

A reduced-tail machine and a zero-tail machine should therefore be compared using their published dimensions. The words alone do not tell you how much room a particular setup needs.

Read a Named Manufacturer Example Carefully

The Bobcat E20 North American product page lists 0 in tail-swing overhang for the standard-arm specification and describes a zero-tail design. The page also offers an additional counterweight option. That is a reason to check the ordered configuration, not to assume an optional component leaves every published dimension unchanged.

The same caution applies when comparing a mini excavator zero tail swing listing with a machine described simply as compact. Ask for the rear-envelope drawing and the configuration behind it. A model's nominal ton class is not a measurement of its rear clearance.

For Qisheng equipment, request confirmation of the actual tail layout on the quoted QS model. Photographs and a familiar model name do not establish a zero-tail specification.

Use a Clearance Calculation Without Turning It into a Safety Limit

Consider a hypothetical 1,600 mm clear strip beside a building and a machine whose relevant width is 1,200 mm. The subtraction leaves 400 mm of total geometric difference. It does not create an approved 200 mm working clearance on each side.

That remaining space still has to accommodate positioning error, protruding fittings, surface conditions and the controlled work area required by the machine instructions and site plan. Separately mark where the bucket will open and where material will be placed. If either crosses a boundary, zero rear overhang has not solved the job.

This is also why the machine size selection guide should be read alongside the site plan. A smaller rear envelope is useful only if the complete machine can perform the required task.

Questions Buyers Ask

Does zero tail swing mean the whole machine stays inside the tracks?

No. It describes the rear upper-body envelope under the manufacturer's stated conditions. The working equipment can project well beyond it.

Is zero tail swing the same as a swing boom?

They address different movements. A swing boom offsets the digging equipment relative to the upper structure; tail swing concerns the rear body as that upper structure rotates.

Is a zero tail swing mini excavator always the better purchase?

Compare the actual work envelope, capacity information, access and configuration. Rear clearance may be decisive on one site and irrelevant on another.
