Mini Excavator Travel Speed: Low Gear vs High Gear
Qisheng Machinery · Buyer Guide · Prepared October 27, 2026
Quick Answer
Mini excavator travel speed is the machine's movement along its tracks, not its digging rate or upperstructure swing speed. A two-speed system provides different travel modes; its maximum catalogue speed is not a promised average across a working site.
Compare low and high speed, their available traction and the supplied control arrangement. Then calculate how much travel the job actually requires. A short digging cycle with a long spoil route may be better served by a separate material carrier than by repeatedly tracking the excavator back and forth.

Read Travel, Traction and Swing as Separate Specifications
| Catalogue entry | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Low travel speed | Track movement in the stated lower-speed mode | A universal setting for every slope or surface |
| High travel speed | Maximum stated movement in the higher-speed mode | Average site speed or permission to travel at that speed |
| Traction force | The stated tractive effort for the specified mode | Ground support, unrestricted climbing or towing permission |
| Swing speed | Rotation of the upperstructure | Travel speed along the ground |
The Cat 301.5 specification lists low/high travel speeds of 2.9/4.4 km/h and corresponding maximum traction forces of 16.0/10.3 kN. This named example shows that the faster mode and higher tractive effort are different choices. These values do not describe Qisheng travel motors.
Confirm whether a proposed machine changes mode manually or includes an automatic function, and how that function behaves. A rabbit symbol on a control panel is not enough to identify the complete arrangement. Request the operating instructions for the delivered version, including travel orientation and the required attachment position.
Do not use a gradeability figure as permission to drive across a particular slope. Surface condition, machine configuration and the manufacturer's operating restrictions still apply. This article does not establish a slope limit or a travel procedure for a QS machine.
Calculate Distance Before Predicting Time Saved
Use time in minutes = distance in metres ÷ (speed in km/h × 1,000) × 60. The result is a theoretical constant-speed time, before acceleration, stops, turns, congestion and terrain.
For an assumed clear 100 m route, applying the two published Cat speeds above gives the following illustration. It is arithmetic using catalogue speeds, not a field test or an expected delivery-site performance figure.
| Distance and speed assumption | Calculated movement time |
|---|---|
| 100 m at 2.9 km/h | About 2.07 minutes |
| 100 m at 4.4 km/h | About 1.36 minutes |
| Difference for that one journey | About 42 seconds |
| 12 round trips, each 200 m total, at 2.9 km/h | About 49.7 minutes |
| Same 2,400 m total at 4.4 km/h | About 32.7 minutes |
The last two rows assume the entire distance could be travelled continuously at the selected maximum. Real work will not meet that assumption. Their purpose is to show that travel distance can become a significant part of the job, even when each individual journey seems short.
Record the reason for each journey. Is the excavator changing digging position, collecting an attachment, reaching a loading point or carrying material? Some trips can be removed by planning tool storage and spoil collection. Carrying material also needs the machine's permitted operating method; a bucket full of soil does not make every travel arrangement acceptable.
For excavation-output calculations, use the separate hourly trenching guide. Do not convert travel speed directly into metres of trench per hour.
Choose the Machine and Site Layout Together
Measure the route from the unloading position to each working area. Include gates, corners, overhead restrictions, crossings and the place where pedestrians or other vehicles may appear. The route that fits the machine's width may still be unsuitable because it lacks support or a controlled turning area.
| Route feature | Buying or planning question |
|---|---|
| Frequent moves between small work areas | What travel modes and controls are supplied? |
| Weak or finished surfaces | Is the ground suitable, and what protection is specified? |
| Long distance to the spoil collection point | Can a separate carrier shorten the excavator's travel? |
| Repeated narrow turns | Does the layout allow a suitable turning method? |
| Work mixed with pedestrians | How will routes and machine movements be controlled? |
Ask for a demonstration of the quoted travel controls during handover, in a suitable controlled area with a qualified operator. Check the actual instructions rather than experimenting with switches during a live job. If a machine unexpectedly slows, pulls to one side or produces a new noise, record the symptom and arrange inspection. Do not assume a slower speed always means the selected gear is wrong.
For Qisheng orders, specify whether frequent site relocation is a priority and request the actual low/high travel ratings and supplied control description. QS model class and engine rating alone do not identify the travel system. Include the required route dimensions and the completed machine's transport requirements in the quotation review.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast does a mini excavator go?
Use the exact model's published low/high travel figures. The Cat example above is 2.9/4.4 km/h; it is not a universal range for every mini excavator.
Is high gear always the productive choice?
No. The appropriate mode depends on the machine's instructions and the route. A higher catalogue speed cannot override traction, control or site restrictions.
Can travel speed predict daily digging output?
No. Digging output also depends on excavation geometry, ground, bucket, cycle time, loading and delays. Travel is only one part of the work.
