Mini Excavator Tree Shear: Capacity and Carrier Fit
Qisheng Machinery · Buyer Guide · Prepared October 20, 2026
Quick Answer
A mini excavator tree shear cuts stems using a blade and supporting jaw arrangement. It does not perform the same job as a timber grapple, a brush cutter or a stump grinder. Selection starts with the actual material, the manufacturer's cutting conditions and the complete attachment/carrier combination.
Tree diameter is only one part of that decision. Species, condition, access, the part being held and the loads created during handling all matter. A published maximum cut is not a guarantee that the excavator can support and control every tree of that diameter.

Read Diameter with Its Conditions
Product sheets may distinguish hardwood from softwood and base tools from tools with rotation or collectors. Keep those distinctions in the order. A large jaw opening is not necessarily the rated cutting diameter, and a cutting capacity is not a lifting rating.
| Published field | What it describes | Separate question still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting diameter | Manufacturer's stated cutting capability and conditions | What material and stem condition are involved? |
| Jaw opening | Space available at the stated opening | Can the intended stem be positioned correctly? |
| Base weight | Tool in the defined configuration | What do coupler, rotator and other options add? |
| Carrier class | Initial machine-size range | Is the complete arrangement approved at working reach? |
| Flow and pressure | Hydraulic requirements for the specified version | Can the carrier provide the required service? |
For material that has already been cut, a grapple may be the relevant handling tool. The shear decision should remain centred on controlled cutting and the accompanying handling plan.
A Named Example Shows the Importance of Wood Type
The current TMK 150 product page lists cutting capacity up to 100 mm hardwood or 150 mm softwood. It gives 85 kg weight without attachments or bolt-on coupler, a 1–3 ton excavator range, and for the standard cylinder 180 bar recommended pressure with 40–100 L/min oil flow.
These figures belong to that stated TMK configuration. They are not QS attachment specifications, and the carrier range does not establish that every small excavator provides the listed flow. Confirm the applicable manual and version when ordering a tree shear for mini excavator use.
Do not replace the two wood-specific limits with a single unconditional “150 mm capacity” statement. The narrower condition may determine whether the proposed task is within the tool's stated scope.
Keep Cutting and Handling Assessments Separate
For a hypothetical comparison, a 120 mm hardwood stem is 20 mm above the named product page's 100 mm hardwood figure. It should not be treated as acceptable merely because 120 mm is below the 150 mm softwood figure. The material condition attached to the number matters.
Likewise, a successful cut does not make the remaining stem or crown manageable by the carrier. The work needs an appropriate assessment of attachment mass, reach, material behaviour, exclusion area and nearby structures or services. A buying guide cannot establish a felling method or approve a particular tree.
A useful quotation identifies whether a rotator, collector or hanging connection is included and supplies the revised dimensions and mass. Changing those components can change the handling arrangement even though the shear's model number is unchanged.
Keep tree cutting separate from below-ground work. The stump-removal guide concerns a different phase of the job, with roots and ground disturbance rather than a standing stem.
Questions Buyers Ask
Can a tree shear replace a grapple?
Some tools include handling features, but the intended loads and approved uses must be checked. A cutting jaw is not automatically approved for every grapple task.
Does a larger hydraulic flow increase rated diameter?
Do not exceed or reinterpret the manufacturer's limits. Flow, pressure, cylinder configuration and permitted material remain model-specific.
Are tree shears for mini excavators suitable for every wood type?
No. Use the wood type and condition stated for the chosen product, rather than transferring a softwood figure to hardwood or an unidentified stem.
Can Qisheng confirm a shear from a carrier's ton-class label?
The actual carrier mass, hydraulics, mounting and applicable capacity information are needed. A nominal model class does not supply those facts.
